A heart attack occurs when the blood supply to part of the bean muscle is stopped because of a blockage in one of the coronary arteries. The result is the death of a section of the heart muscle (myocardial infarction), causing the symptoms of an intense, crushing pain in the chest and breathlessness.
A person having a heart attack is usually very distressed, and may not be able to communicate. The skin is pale, cold and clammy, and the pulse is often rapid, weak and may be irregular. The blood pressure can be either high or low, the latter being more common. If a significant amount of the heart muscle has been destroyed, the patient may display the signs associated with a failing heart and circulation, such as shortness of breath or cyanosis (a bluish discolouration of the skin due to lack of oxygen). Shortness of breath is caused by the heart failing to pump blood effectively, resulting in the accumulation of fluid within the lungs.
